The word Hypnosis is often associated with images of stage performers and mind control, leading many Christians worried that it is some kind of 'woo woo' that is inappropriate. And while it probably is inappropriate to quack like a duck in front of dozens of strangers, hypnosis can also be a beneficial and morally acceptable practice for Christians. Think of it as a useful tool. It all depends on who is using it and what their intention is.
So What Is Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is fundamentally nothing more than a heightened state of focus and relaxation. We naturally slip into and out of hypnotic states several times a day. If you have ever gotten lost in a daydream, or got caught up reading a good book, you have experienced hypnosis. This state allows more control to the subconscious, while our thinking mind is doing other things, and it's a completely natural God-given ability.
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses this state to promote healing and self-improvement. It is not about losing control or succumbing to someone else's will. It's about letting someone act as a guide to accessing the subconscious mind, to help us solve problems more quickly than traditional talking therapies. Many misconceptions about hypnosis come from TV and movies, where all too often villains use it to manipulate victims. But in reality it simply doesn't work that way. You are always in control and can come out of hypnosis just as quickly as coming out of a daydream when someone calls your name.
Biblical Principles and Hypnosis
The Bible does not explicitly mention hypnosis, but that's probably because the word had not been invented yet. The Bible does make many references to meditation, which is a form of hypnosis that is usually done alone. Throughout the Psalms, there are at least 14 verses which talk about meditation. And consider the Bible's many calls to "meditate on the word of God". So it's very difficult to deny meditation's place in the Christian faith.
The Bible also emphasizes the importance of mental health and healing. Scriptures such as Philippians 4:8 encourage believers to focus on what is true, noble, and praiseworthy. Hypnotherapy can help individuals align their thoughts with these positive attributes, aiding in overcoming negative thought patterns and behaviors.
Hypnosis as a God-Given Tool for Healing
God has provided various means for healing and self-improvement, and hypnosis can be seen as one of these tools. The hypnotic state is something that everyone has been given, so we should not shun it any more than we should shun the use of our thumbs. Hypnotherapy has been proven to have great benefits in addressing issues like anxiety, stress, addiction, and even chronic pain. By helping individuals achieve mental and emotional well-being, hypnosis aligns with the Christian principle of seeking wholeness and healing through God’s provision.
Ethical and Controlled Use
Hypnosis for Christians must be practiced ethically and within the framework of Christian values. Hypnotherapists like me, who respect their clients' beliefs and maintain professional integrity, ensure that the process is used for the right purposes. Christians can seek out practitioners who share their values and approach hypnotherapy with prayerful consideration.
Empowering the Mind and Spirit
Hypnosis can empower individuals to overcome personal struggles and grow spiritually. By tapping into the subconscious, believers can address deep-seated issues, break free from harmful habits, and foster a stronger relationship with God. It is a way to harness the power of the mind, which God has intricately designed, for personal growth and spiritual enrichment.
Distinguishing Between Therapy and the Occult
It’s crucial to distinguish therapeutic hypnosis from practices associated with the occult or New Age spirituality. Christians should avoid any form of hypnosis that involves invoking spirits, channeling, or any practice that contradicts biblical teachings. Instead, they should focus on hypnosis as a scientific and therapeutic method that respects and honors their faith.
Conclusion
Hypnosis, when understood and practiced correctly, can be a valuable tool for Christians seeking mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. By understanding hypnosis and aligning its use with biblical principles, believers can embrace it as part of God’s provision for holistic healing. As with any practice, prayerful discernment and adherence to ethical standards are key to ensuring that hypnosis serves as a beneficial and faith-compatible aid in the Christian journey.
